Course Description

Oral Pathology Case & Concepts: What Are We REALLY Looking For?
Dental professionals routinely identify oral pathologies and anomalies during patient assessment and/or treatment. This course is an overview of oral pathologic conditions presented in a fun and engaging format of case presentation, differential diagnoses, and final diagnosis. Most cases are from Ms. Lukes’ own personal image collection of pathology cases acquired over 40 years as a dental hygienist/educator/researcher, working with dentist partners in identification, diagnosis, treatment and/or referral. Etiology, clinical appearance, and treatment options are included for each lesion/condition, highlighting the assessment phase of the process of care. The course includes both common and uncommon conditions, many of which are signs of systemic disease, emphasized in a discussion about interdisciplinary collaboration with other health professionals. A team approach to diagnosis of pathologies can elevate the services of the dental practice, building additional confidence among patients, as they recognize that dental care involves much more than preventive and restorative care.
