Biography
Dr. Shapira attended Temple University School of Dentistry, followed by a GPR at Mt. Zion Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, California. He was an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of the Pacific Arthur Dugoni School of Dentistry in the 1980’s, where he taught and developed courses in treating the older, medically compromised individual. He has taught the Mastership course in Geriatric and Special Needs Dentistry for the California Academy of General Dentistry for the past 15+ years. He was appointed by the US State Department through a non-profit teaching association, to teach and lecture in Mainland China, part-time from 2007-2018, being appointed a Professor of Geriatric Dentistry, Medicine and Nursing and receiving that countries, “Friendship Award,” their highest award for Humanitarian service. Dr. Shapira holds a master’s degree in clinical Geriatrics and a master’s degree in health administration. He has been teaching dentistry for over 40 years, and recently published a textbook: “Geriatric Dentistry: Gateway to Longevity and Life-Long Health,” by Edra Publishing.

This course is designed for the dental practitioner, the dental team: dental hygienists, and assistants and any other ancillary dental personnel, to educate them on the factors that affect extending their lives and general health, as well as that of their patients, especially their older patients.

Special Needs Dentistry

This course will discuss the developmental disabilities of special needs patients with respect to being dental patients, and, what to look for in the dental office regarding their care process and how to be aware of the issues that affect these “special people” with special needs.

Geriatric Dentistry: Treating the Older Adult Patient

The goal of this self-study on-demand course is to encompass the changes upon us in patient care, caring, assessment, treatment planning and possible treatment modalities available. Our older population will be maintaining their teeth longer and will have more discretionary income to spend on staying healthy.
