Practice Management, TMD, TMJ
Part 1 will review the Temporomandibular Disorders that are a group of conditions, often painful, that affects the Temporomandibular Joint and the muscles of mastication. It has been estimated by the National Institutes of Health that approximately 10 million people are affected. During this presentation, attendees will discover the anatomy, signs, symptoms, and treatments available for TMD patients. Understanding the structure and function of the joint and its disease manifestations, participants will be able to understand the frustration that often accompanies the TMD patient.
Following the discussion of TMD, participants in part 2 will develop an understanding of the WHY behind incorporating medical billing into the practice for both TMD and other dental procedures. Part 2 will discuss the ROI and value medical billing can bring along with increasing patient case acceptance. If the practice has tried medical billing previously and failed, this program will offer the steps to making it work. Whether a specialty or general practice, shifting the practice’s and team’s mindset from just being a “dentist” to that of a “medical specialist” can improve the overall care for the patient and provide profitability and growth for the practice and team.

Course Objectives
At the completion of this course the participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate a review of the anatomy of the Temporomandibular Joint
- Identify the signs and symptoms of TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders) that can be recognized in patients
- Examine the possible etiological factors which contribute to the development of TMD
- Discuss the various methods of evaluation and treatment of TMD patients
- Verbalize the role of the dental team in providing comprehensive care for TMD patients
- Identify dental procedures that can be billed to medical insurers for TMD and other treatments
- Recognize differences between dental and medical insurance
- Describe ways medical insurance can increase patient case acceptance while decreasing insurance write-offs
- Recognize ways dental team members can inform patients about medical billing
