In this informative and emotional course, you will learn from a 16 year cancer survivor (and dentist) the steps he used to achieve "his" best outcome as well as the best outcome for multiple cancer patients he has treated. Dr. Blackburn will navigate you through the process from the exam, diagnosis, pre-treatment, active-treatment and post-treatment phases. Long term successes and failures will also be discussed. At the end of this course you will feel confident on how to give these patients the best dental and psychological outcome.

Participants will learn an introduction of forensic odontology. A study of a comprehensive dental autopsy will be presented, including physical examination, photography, radiography and the forensic evidence management needs of varying postmortem states. In the afternoon, participants will learn how forensic odontology is applied outside of the morgue with discussions regarding missing persons, human trafficking & abuse identification.

In this lecture, we will discuss how to develop an analytical strategy to review all 2D and 3D images systematically, and we will learn the importance of pattern recognition in diagnosing and differentiating benign and malignant lesions. We will also review common but important soft tissue calcifications in plain film and CBCT. We will also get an overview of paranasal sinuses and TMJ evaluation. Lastly, we will review the role of interprofessional communication in improving patient outcomes and the importance of selection criteria in using different imaging modalities for a specific task.

As we begin to look at the COVID-19 pandemic in the rear-view mirror, the science and understanding and of this disease continues to evolve, and new emerging infectious diseases are now within our communities. While disease transmission in dentistry is rare, consequences may be severe. Participants will learn the latest policies and procedures that impact effective infection control in the dental setting. And, the entire dental team will learn that infection prevention is a team-sport that requires constant attention, education, and compliance.

What potential complications lurk behind the patient’s medical history that may impact dental therapy? This program will provide an overview of the dental implications of the medications, supplements and substances of abuse most frequently used by patients. The pharmacology of pain control and the effective management of acute dental pain using non-opioid and opioid analgesics will be presented as well as an overview of the pharmacology and therapeutics of local anesthetic agents.
