Course Description

Periodontics

Optimizing the Patient’s Overall Health in Your Practice
The effects of periodontal infection and inflammation are not limited to the destruction of the periodontium. There is an increasing body of evidence outlining its influence on systemic health. Many systemic diseases have an inflammatory component to their pathogenesis and are impacted by increases in inflammation as a result of periodontitis. Bacteremia’s can occur in the inflamed periodontal pocket and can contribute to disease remote form the oral cavity. The course will illustrate the systemic impact of periodontitis in Cardiovascular disease, Diabetes, Pregnancy, Alzheimer’s disease, Osteoporosis and Rheumatoid arthritis. This area has received a great amount of interest in the lay press. Many of our patients have undiagnosed diseases. The mouth is a mirror of the body and often it displays the first symptoms of a systemic disease, detrimental habit, or addiction. Recognizing these symptoms and facilitating the proper diagnosis and treatment can be very important for these patients. This course will outline the current knowledge and what you should tell your patients and how you can contribute to the patient’s overall well-being by optimizing their oral health.

Individualized Periodontal Therapy
An evidence-based overview of new innovations in periodontal therapy will be presented. The seminar will give you answers to commonly asked questions about challenges in periodontal therapy. When can our patients benefit from adjunctive antibiotic, anti-microbial or inflammatory regulation? When and how do we safely premedicate our patients? How can we best control biofilms? Which patients benefit from regenerative care, or advanced periodontal therapy? When do we know we have optimized the periodontal health and what are the endpoints for treatment? How can we mitigate the negative oral health consequences of smoking and vaping through behavior modification? Motivation of our patients remains challenging and critical for success of therapy. Motivational interviewing and understanding of risks can increase compliance. The seminar will provide you with practical methods to increase acceptance of periodontal therapy.
